Setting Sun now offers some support for 3Dfx accelerated rendering.
Due to the nature of these cards (they replace the video signal from the main video card with their own output), only a subset of Setting Sun faders can support 3Dfx acceleration. Faders which do not support 3Dfx acceleration will continue to run, and simply ignore the 3Dfx card.
The faders which currently support 3Dfx acceleration are:
Roller Coaster
StonerView
Chrome
Image Cube
Inferno
MetaSpin
Ripple
Yum
Due to the nature of the 3Dfx RAVE engine, some of these faders have to behave slightly differently when running under 3Dfx. E.g., the Roller Coaster fader ignores the size control and always runs at full screen, and the Yum fader only displays four apples.
Apple’s OpenGL does not support 3Dfx rendering, therefore OpenGL faders can not currently be accelerated.
GameWizard 3Dfx cards are not currently supported - only cards which provide RAVE drivers can be used by Setting Sun. If you believe your card should be supported, please contact <dair@webthing.net>. Support for GameWizard cards is being investigated.
Activating 3Dfx Rendering
To activate 3Dfx acceleration, you must enable the following extensions with the Extensions Manager:
3Dfx RAVE
3DfxGlideLib2.x
If you do not have these extensions installed, you should be able to find them on your 3Dfx CD.
You must also disable the following extensions with the Extensions Manager:
ATI 3D Accelerator
ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator
If these extensions are present, QuickDraw 3D will ignore the 3Dfx RAVE engine.
Finally, you must also enable the “Allow faders to use 3Dfx hardware” checkbox in the Setting Sun preferences window.
Due to stability problems with the 3Dfx RAVE engine, you must explicitly request 3Dfx support from Setting Sun. If you encounter system instability after enabling 3Dfx acceleration, it is recommended that you revert to software rendering.
